Maaike in Afrika

Zo, maar weer even naar Nederlands geswitcht voor oma ;)

We zijn inmiddels al drie dagen in Tanga. Vanuit Dar hebben we de bus gepakt en die bracht ons in zes uurtjes naar dit mooie kustplaatsje in het noorden van Tanzania :) Even een paar keywords om jullie een indrukte geven van de reis:

- Heel veel verkopers langs de route, bij iedere busstop komen ze met hun koopwaar naar de bus toegerend.

- Veel palmen, bananenbomen, mais en sisal planten langs de weg.

- Plassen doe je in de buitenlucht, met zn allen langs de weg ;)

-Rode aarde met groene planten is een mooi gezicht

- Je wordt goed verzorgd in de bus: je krijgt drinken en eten.

- Tanzanianen houden van slechte aziatische vechtfilms en ze maken zelf ook hele slechte films ;)

Verder is Tanga een heel mooi plaatsje: het ligt aan zee en we hebben een kamer met uitzicht ;) En dat voor maar 10000 shilling per nacht, voor 2 personen! Reken maar uit hoeveel euro dat per persoon is als je bedenkt dat 1700 shilling 1 euro is ;)

Gisteren zijn we met een tourguide naar de Amboni caves en hot springs geweest, maar daar vertel ik later nog meer over. Vandaag hebben we gerelaxt en niet zoveel gedaan ;)

Morgen gaan we naar Lushoto. Daar zijn de Usambara mountains, waar we gaan wandelen. Daarna gaan we richting Moshi en Arusha, en dan zien we wel weer verder ;) Alles gaat hier pole pole (langzaam/rustig aan) en dat geldt ook steeds meer voor ons. Helaas is de internetverbinding net zo.. foto’s uploaden lukt dus nog niet echt. Die houden jullie nog tegoed!

Oh, en chungwa’s zijn tamu (lekker) ;)

Once again a message from Dar Es Salaam. Yesterday, Miranda, Annabel (a friend of Miranda) and me arrived at the airport at 7 AM. The trip on the plane was ok, plenty of food and water, but it was a bit too hot to get enough sleep.

When we arrived in Dar, we were picked up and taken to our hostel, the Jambo Inn. It’s a nice and clean hostel in the middle of the city. After sleeping and resting for a few hours, we decided to walk around Dar for the rest of the day. It’s a chaotic and dusty city, at first sight. That has to do with the traffic driving on the left, but also with the fact that everyone says hello to you and wants to have a chat :) And another funny thing is that we walk way too fast compared to Africans ;) So we are telling ourselves to slow down and adjust to the African pace of life. I Think I’ll manage ;)

Other than that, Dar is a relatively small city, as far as we can say now, because we’ve been able to walk everywhere. In the afternoon we spent some time in a park, where we got to know some Tanzanian guys who were doing voluntary work. They told us about the city, the country and how things work around here. An icecream, a chungwa (orange) and a while later, a friend of Annabel picked us up to guide us around the city. We saw the port, some markets and the students’ disctrict, as well as the Presidential residence. By the way, if the streets in Dar get really quiet, with no traffic at all, and all of a sudden you hear some sirens and see some police, you’ll soon after see the car of the President racing by ;)

Today, Miranda and Annabel are getting their residence permit, so I have some time to write this post. After they get back, we’re going to try to find out how to get to Tanga on Friday. Annabel will stay in Dar, and Miranda and me are planning a trip up north, which will take about 3 weeks. First stop: Tanga :)

Hello everyone! We’ve arrived in Dar Es Salaam, so just a quick note for now. It’s hot here and we’ve been walking through Dar today.

Damn! Time flies!

Only two more weeks and I’m on a plane to Tanzania :) Just a few more things to finish before I’m finally ready to go: graduating (18th of June, perfectly timed ;)), packing stuff, moving out (19th), saying goodbye and making sure to be on time for the plane.

Seems manageable, no stress needed :P

Welkom op mijn weblog! Op deze site zal ik vanaf 23 juni 2008 mijn reisverhalen bij gaan houden, want dan vertrek ik voor zo’n 6 maanden naar Afrika.

Ik weet nog niet of ik de verhalen in het Nederlands of in het Engels ga schrijven, dus voorlopig zullen mijn posts nog even tweetalig zijn.
